Abstract

World history records that the longest-lived family company is the Kongo Gumi Company in Japan, which reached 14 centuries and only ended in 2006. The long lifeof this family business company involved 40 generations of leadership in theorganization. In a discussion of recent research results, it was revealed that theaverage age of a family business, which could reach hundreds of years, then shrank to47 years and currently the average is only 17 years. Other data shows that familybusinesses are increasingly less durable as the transition from the first generation tothe second generation and so on continues to experience a decline in sustainability. The leadership regeneration process of family companies is a strategic issue and weakregeneration in family businesses often kills businesses that have been initiated. Research data shows that only 5% of family companies survive until the fourthgeneration. This research is important to carry out to support the hope for the need forcontinuity of family companies. With this research, important factors can be foundthat must be considered in ensuring the continuity of family companies. Theformulation of the problem that is of concern to the research is the need to build asustainability model for family companies today based on corporate sustainabilitytheory by understanding the challenges of regeneration of family company businessactors and environmental sustainability. So this research also gives rise to novelty /new research, namely an analysis of the continuity of family companies based oncorporate sustainability theory to build a model of family company sustainability asan embodiment of interdisciplinary studies between the fields of business science andenvironmental science. The literature review deepens theories about family companies and corporatesustainability theory, leadership theory and other study concepts, accompanied byreviewing research journals with related research topics. At the end of the literaturereview, a compatibility chart is presented between family business theory andcorporate sustainability theory which is the basis for reviewing and analyzing researchdata. This research is qualitative research using the IPA (InterpretativePhenomenology Analysis) method. With a systematic data collection process throughinterviews and observations of research participants, carrying out data validationprocesses, data processing and presenting data in tables, drawing conclusions usingapplicable software to help carefully conclude research results according to theresearch problems and topics. The data collected starts from the vision and mission of establishing the family company, the business practices carried out so far to themodels of the regeneration process that have been implemented so far. The family company profiles presented in this research are the 8 familycompanies that participated in the research, which provides a complete picture ofhow these companies struggle with various problems and challenges to achievesustainability. The research results are presented in a conclusion based on accurate andrelevant data to answer the research question how to build family companysustainability and produce a family company sustainability model construction basedon corporate sustainability theory . From the literature review and research data, itcan be concluded that family companies face challenges and pressure from twoimportant and difficult things at the moment, namely the regeneration of businessactors and environmental sustainability. On the one hand, challenges and pressuresregarding the regeneration of family companies can be overcome with internalpolicies through the choice of family company organizational format. On the otherhand, what is difficult and non-negotiable concerns environmental sustainability factors. Construction of the research model was prepared based on 2 serious challenges of family company sustainability, namely the challenges of regeneration and environmental sustainability by combining 8 existing models for research participants and articulated in the stages and processes of how a family company's sustainability meets the criteria in accordance with the family company theory and corporate sustainability theory used. as a road map for the sustainability of family companies.
