Abstract

This study aims to analyze the emotional dynamics and psychological impact of Friends with Benefits (FWB) relationships in early adults. The FWB phenomenon has become an interesting topic in recent years, especially among early adults seeking sexual freedom and satisfaction without commitment. This study uses a qualitative research method, focusing on the experiences and perspectives of individuals who are or have been in FWB relationships. Two research subjects, namely Jelly and Coffee, were selected based on predetermined criteria. They are 24 and 25 years old, and have been in an FWB relationship for several years. The results showed that the two subjects had different views on the relationship between FWB. Jelly interprets FWB as a relationship without commitment that tends to be negative, while Kopi interprets FWB as a friendship relationship with physical access without commitment ties. They also have different FWB relationship characteristics, with Jelly focusing more on sexual gain and Coffee focusing more on emotional gain. The study also found that FWB relationships can provide benefits, such as the freedom to have relationships without commitment and meeting sexual needs without emotional distress. However, FWB relationships can also pose risks, such as the emergence of feelings of jealousy and dissatisfaction that can damage the relationship. Emotional dynamics in FWB relationships were also found in this study. FWB relationships can provide sexual satisfaction, but they can also lead to feelings of loneliness and xii dissatisfaction. Unwanted emotional attachment can arise, especially if one party starts to have feelings for more. This study shows that FWB is a complex phenomenon among early adults, with different motivations and expectations between men and women. Therefore, this study recommends conducting further research to explore the long-term impact of FWB relationships, especially on mental health and interpersonal relationships
