Abstract

Language is the main device for us to communicate each other. We use language when we transfer our ideas or our argument to others. We usually use two kinds of language, they are spoken language and written language. Coherence and cohesion plays an important role in written language. Without coherence and cohesion, the reader can not understand ideas occurring in the written language. The aims of this thesis are to describe the coherence and cohesion relationship in John Milton’s poem entitled A A Solemn Music, and further, to understand the message brought out by this poem based on the description of coherence and cohesion relation in the poem. In order to reach the aims, the writer used a qualitative method. Then the sample was analyzed based on Beaugrande and Halliday’s theory of coherence and cohesion. The writer can analyze this poem, because poetry is included to the written language, so it can be analyzed by discourse analysis. The results show that this poem is containing a cohesive ties, these are reference (23 times), substitution (once), ellipsis ( 2 times ), conjunction ( 12 times ), and lexical cohesion ( 13 times ) which are perform the coherence in it, and as the result of its coherence, this poem is successful on transmitting its ideas to the reader.
