Abstract

ABSTRACT Tradition and change are discussed and analyzed in this thesis. Tradition might be very dominant and powerful, and therefore it is not easy to change. In many societies, the people hold their traditions tightly. However, traditions are open to something new. In order to understand how traditions and change encounter, the researcher chose a film - Chocolat as t e object of analysis. The aims of the study arc to find out the kinds of traditions presented in the movie, and to analyze the changes that take place in the community in the movie as a consequence of new things brought in by the main character, Vianne. For these purposes, the writer applies sociological perspective. This study gives proofs the readers by providing symbols which established the fact that traditions and society are unity, encouraging the readers to be open-minded to accept diversity ill society. By doing social interactions, conflicts can be minimized
