Abstract

Abstract It was taboo to address someone by using animals' names. The use of animals' names in addressing was only for the purpose of abusing. Now, the use of animals' names as address terms is meant for both abusing and affectionate sense and it occurs among students in Soegiojapranata Catholic University. The students have some reasons to use those address terms. The purpose of this study is to find out the students' reasons to use animals' names in addressing their friends. The data were collected through questionnaire distributed to 40 respondents in Soegijapranata Catholic University. It was analyzed on the basic of the theory of power and solidarity. The writer used the theory of Resectar and Radie (2003) written in their journal entitled "Animal Names Used in Addressing People in Serbian". Th resul s of the study show that the students address their friends by using animals' names to show solidarity and closeness. Moreover, the students use those address terms to convey some similarities etween the addressee and the animals, such as character, appearance, intelligence, eating lrabit and emotional similarities.
