Abstract

Movie has an important role in the lifestyle of the youth nowadays. Not only can it be one of the sources of entertainment, but it can also be the source in learning the culture of foreign countries, especially a foreign language. There are so many English language movies imported to Indonesia and subtitled into Indonesian language. However, the subtitles, especially those for English swearwords, sometimes inappropriately reflect the original meaning of the English words. Therefore, in this study the writer explores the subtitles of English swearwords found in Bad Boys II, an English language movie which has so many swearwords mentioned in the dialogue, to find out how theknglish swearwords are subtitled in Indonesian. The writer tries to igure out how the English swearwords in the movie are mostly subtitled in Indonesian language. This study is very important to be conducted as the movie is one of the box office movies that is imported to Indonesia and subtitled in Indonesian language. In addition, almost all young people i Indonesia know about the movie. The existence of the inappropriate Indonesian subtitles- of the English swearwords may lead to a misunderstanding of the swearwords' original meaning and it can be very dangerous for the English eginner learners, especially when they have to communicate with a native speaker of English, They can just "nn-ocently utter a swearword to the native speaker of English without knowing what exactly the real meaning of the swearword is so they may unintentionally offend the natives feeling. The result of the study o_ows thatiJher,e are six ways to subtitle the English swearwords found in the Indonesian subtitle of the movie: under subtitled, over formaJly subtitled, euphemized, literally subtitled well subtitled, and miscellaneous. As the conclusion, the swearwords are goner:afl--yunder subtitled (52.72%).
