Abstract

Smartphones are an important object for every age level. This makes the use of smartphones at any time and place become a current phenomenon. However, it seems that this activity has a long-term impact that can affect their daily activities. Multiple studies have reported that teenagers who suffer from smartphone addiction will be isolating themselves from the social environment, having poor relationships, and getting anxious, uncomfortable psychological conditions. There are several factors that may lead to smartphone addiction. This article was written with the aim of finding out the relationship between self-control, feelings of loneliness, and smartphone addiction in teenagers. The literature review used in this study was determined by reviewing previous articles with the following keywords: self-control, loneliness, and smartphone addiction. Those literatures were sourced from multiple online platforms. The results of the reviewed literature indicated that teenagers' self-control and feelings of loneliness can affect smartphone addiction. It also turned out that self-control and feelings of loneliness are strong causative factors that led to smartphone addiction. Teenagers with high self-control result in lower rates of smartphone addiction, and vice versa. In addition, teenagers with high feelings of loneliness result in higher rates of smartphone addiction, and vice versa. Those studies suggest that smartphone addiction could be reduced by increasing psychological factors either from themselves or the surrounding environment, such as time management, increased self-control, as well as parental support and supervision in providing more useful activities.
