Abstract

Frankly in Love is a coming-of-age novel or a bildungsroman written by David Yoon in 2019. The story is about Frank Li, a Korean-American who has problems in fulfilling the expectation from his family, especially his parents, to behave and follow the Korean traditions despite the fact that they live in the United States. The aim of this study is to find out the problems faced by Frank Li as a Korean-American. Frank Li’s problems were analyzed using qualitative research design and various theories about Korean tradition. The result showed that Frank Li’s problems are related to filial piety and respect for elders, the importance of education and family reputation, negative attitudes toward marrying other ethnic, family interest over individual interest, continuation of Korean tradition among future generations, and Korean homogeneity. He also has a personal problem in which he doubts both identities either as a Korean or as an American
