Abstract
A ritual, which is an activity or habit carried out for a long time and is hereditary, exists in all cultures. Ritual comes in different forms that mirror particular people’s beliefs and lives. Indonesia is diverse in its ritual performances. One of which becomes the object of this research, the Posonan ritual. This study aims to describe the procedures of this tradition and inform the readers of its functions. The writer observed and interviewed some informants in Dawung, RT 7 RW 11, Pudakpayung to gather information about the ritual. This research revealed that the Posonan ritual has two stages: preparation and performance. Preparation is done to decide on the distribution of tasks, agree on the place to do the ritual, and discuss all the stuff required for the ritual. The event is carried out after the shalat isya, and then the foods, like yellow rice as the main staple food of the ritual and many other foods, are brought to the designated place for the ritual. The ritual is opened with the prayer, followed by the sholawat, and then people eat the food. After all is done, people start to share the food with non-Muslims. The study also found out that Posonan serves some functions: to amuse, validate culture, educate, maintain conformity, and serve as a self-compliment
