Abstract

Indonesia has many ethnic groups live and get along in communities, such as Javanese and Chinese Indonesians. Although these two ethnicities live in the same place, Javanese and Chinese Indonesians use different addressing terms when addressing the elders. The research aimed to find out how participants whose ethnicities are Javanese and Chinese Indonesians prefer to be addressed by their interlocutors between Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko with their reasons behind their preference. Also, this research aimed to find out the how participants perceive to the use of addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko. This research was conducted by using qualitative method with 12 participants in total. The instruments were interviews and focus group discussion. The research found that most of the participants prefer to be addressed with an addressing term based on their ethnicity. The reasons behind their preference are: 1) They are used to being addressed with the addressing term; 2) The addressing term suits with their ethnicity and physical appearance; 3) The addressing term matches cultural stereotype; 4) The participant realizes Indonesia has many cultures that blend together. Furthermore, there are also four perceptions towards the use of addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko. The perceptions are: 1) The addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko are used to differentiate both ethnicities; 2) The addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko are used to show politeness and respect; 3) The addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko are used to emphasize an existing stereotype; 4) The addressing terms Mbak-Mas and Ci-Ko are used to show power and solidarity.
