Abstract

There are many rituals still exist in this modern life, especially in Indonesia. One of them is the Barikan Besar ritual. This study aims to find out and describe the procedures that make the Barikan Besar ritual not only a cultural event for the locals, and also the offerings that are used in this ritual which are very dependent on the availability of the sources in Karimunjawa. The writer observed and interviewed the locals to collect data about the procedures and offerings in the Barikan Besar ritual. The results of the study show that the Barikan Besar ritual belongs to the high-context ritual because the participants uses particular dress code, the ritual is announced and well planned, and then the ritual is led by some people who have experience and knowledge about the ritual. The ritual has two stages, preparation, and performance. The preparation is to decide the day and the time of the ritual, while the performance consists of the prayer, the parade, the tossing of the buceng (small-sized cone-shaped yellow rice function as offerings only, not to be eaten) to the sea. Barikan Besar also holds additional activities. There are workshops and training, Minagara dance performance, and meal sharing. Concerning the offerings, there are three types of tumpeng (cone-shaped yellow rice): tumpeng raksasa, tumpeng sedang, and buceng (small-sized cone-shaped yellow rice function as offerings only, not to be eaten). The most important offering is the buceng, which is on the top of the tumpeng raksasa that is tossed to the sea during the ritual to show gratitude to God. The other offerings are mung beans, eggs, salted fish, urap-urapan (salad dish from Indonesia), and raw salt.
