Abstract

Gossip is a rumour that is unconfirmed yet whether it is true or false. Many people misunderstand its definition and they gossip without knowing the reason why they do it. Beersma and Van Kleef’s theory on why people gossip suggested that there are four motives that make people want to gossip. The four motives are to influence and manipulate others, to gather and validate information, to have a good time with others, and to warn group members against others who violate group norms. This study intends to find out the motives that make people want to gossip. The writer used them as guidance to do his research on the male students of the Faculty of Language and Arts, Soegijapranata Catholic University. The writer could find out the motives behind their actions to gossip. In this research, the writer used qualitative research to find out the motives of gossipy talks and also the most discussed topics the male students mostly gossip about. The writer employed an open-ended questionnaire as the first instrument and hold a one-on-one interview as the second instrument. The total number of research participants for the open-ended questionnaire was 25 people. The writer decided to hold the interview to validate and confirm the result of the questionnaire. In the interview, the writer selected 15 people from 25 people who participated in the first instrument. Based on the combined results, the writer found out that the motive that mostly made them gossip was the desire to have a good time with others. Meanwhile, the topics of gossip that the participants mostly liked to talk about were general matters such as politics, sports, religion, and some other general topics.
