Abstract

Cap Go Meh is the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The purpose of this study is to describe Tatung, the spirit medium, who is the main part of the Cap Go Meh festival parade in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, and the meaning of the Tatung for Chinese Indonesians in Ketapang. In conducting this research, the writer participated in the Cap Go Meh celebration to observe the tradition, conducted several interviews with several people who understood Cap Go Meh and Tatung. This study found that there are two main kinds of Tatung, the one is possessed by ancient Chinese generals or Chinese gods and the one is possessed by Dayak warriors. The costumes and the accessories worn by those Tatung show the differences between these two kinds of Tatung. During the parade, both kinds of Tatung, similarly show that they are invincible by performing actions like cutting oneself with a knife, stabbing oneself with a machete, and other similar actions. For the people of Ketapang, particularly those of Chinese descendants, the existence of Tatung is important in their life and history. Not only is Tatung a healer but also a peacekeeper and a protector from evil for the Chinese descendants in the region.
