Abstract

Politeness means an act of being respectful and civilized in behavior, polite in speaking, and good in language and behavior according to local custom and culture. There are some strategies in order to maintain politeness. In this research, the writer analyzed the politeness strategy in the meetings among college students using Brown and Levinson. The participants of this research were students of the Faculty of Language and Art in Soegijapranata Catholic University. The writer analyzed the conversation in the online meetings between freshmen, sophomores, and juniors and found that positive politeness strategy is the most frequently used. The most influencing factor is age factor. The writer also found that the reason why positive politeness strategy more dominant is because the students; whether senior or junior students, want to close the gap between them and to show their solidarity
