Abstract

—Sandwich panels such as metal air sandwich or cellular sandwich panels are typical of composites used in various types of lightweight structures. High stiffness, low weight ratios that yield better weight to performance ratio are the main benefits of utilizing such cellular sandwich panels as structural components. The panel is made using a structured steel core sandwiched between two steel plates that maximize build volume with minimal use of material.Slot joint welding system is introduced as an alternative fabrication system utilizing laser or plasma cutting machine to perforate the steel plate in a way that it can be assembled quickly and welded easily from the outer face of the panel. This paper investigated the performance of the slot joint welding system against three point static bending loading by comparing with the fully welded panel. Numerical study of several welding pattern was done to compare the ultimate moment capacity of the sandwich panel.LS Dyna implicit software is employed to generate and simulate 3D solid model of the steel sandwich panel. It was found that the alternated welding pattern exhibit the best result while minimizing the occurrence of skin plate buckling. Slot joint welding system can be used as an alternative fabrication technique that can minimize the cost of the sandwich panel fabrication.
