Abstract

Subtitle is a branch of translation which translates spoken texts (SL) into written texts to be put on the movie screen. It is considered challenging because subtitle has certain limitation on the character and space in order to provide enjoyable-reading texts on the screen. Therefore, text reduction is needed. It is done through applying translation strategies of elimination, rendering, and condensation (proposed by Antonini, 2005). The purpose of the study is investigating what and how strategies are applied in Dirty Grandpa and Inside Out subtitle translation, and investigating subtitle translator’s reasons of using the strategies. Quantitative and qualitative analysis were used to answer the research questions. The researcher analyzed the occurrence of strategy applications in Dirty Grandpa and Inside Out subtitle translation through the movie and subtitle transcripts, and interviewed an expert of subtitle translation. The result of the study confirms Antonini’s theory (2005); it shows that subtitle translators use elimination, rendering, and condensation strategies to help reduce the target text to provide enough time for readers to process the information on the screen and to meet the standard of subtitle publisher companies on character limitation.
