Abstract

The main data of this research are Taufiq Ismail’s poems entitled Bagaimana Kalau and Aku Ingin Menulis Puisi, Yang. In trying to find out the reasons why these two poems are produced, the writer makes use of Piercean Semiotics to study the Historical background of the poems and Biographical background of the poet. In doing so, two research questions have been the guide for this thesis, i.e. how Piercean Semiotics is applied in analyzing the two poems, and what significant historical events in Indonesia and biographical facts of Taufik Ismail are shown through the poems’ analysis. Employing the Trichotomy of Linguistic Signs from Piercean Semiotics enables the writer to analyze the lines, phrases and words based on the theory of Representamen, Object, and Interpretant. This research finds that Ismail’s poems are talking about the history of Indonesia during the late1960s and early 1970s, and how Ismail copes with it. In the poem Bagaimana Kalau, Ismail talks about: the attitude of Indonesian people towards Koes Plus songs and Indonesian anthem, the Vietnam Conflicts and the feared domino theory. Whereas, in the poem Aku Ingin Menulis Puisi, Yang talks about: the influence of foreign investors in Indonesia that gives impact on the existence bribery and corruption, in addition to that it also covers the topic on the aftermath of Gestapu. Thus the result of this research shows that poems are not only a work of art but it can also function as a historical artifact.
