Abstract

Indonesia is a developing country that located in South East Asian with around 18% of the citizens are adolescents. Adolescents are someone who is between 10 to 19 years old and can be divided into two phases, early adolescents and late adolescents. Central Java has prevalence of thin early adolescents and fat late adolescents above the national level (11.1% and 7.3%). Being overweight makes adolescents give their attention to their appearance. Being overweight will increase their body mass index score that can lead to body image dissatisfaction, negative perspective and feeling about one’s body shape and appearance. To overcome body image dissatisfaction, adolescents usually do unhealthy diet behavior that can lead to other complication in long terms. This study aims to discover body image dissatisfaction, nutritional status, and diet quality of adolescents. This study was conducted in Krista Mitra School Seamarang with total sample of 170 students (87 girls and 83 boys). The study was done by giving questionnaire assessing body image dissatisfaction using Body Shape Questionnaire-16A to the students and completed with anthropometric assessment (measuring height and weight) and 24-hour dietary recall for three days (two weekdays and one weekend). Results showed that overnutrition was likely happened in boys than girls. Results also showed that body image dissatisfaction was more happening in girls than boys, especially to students with high nutritional status score. Girls had diet quality score higher than boys, but everyone, including the girls had to improve their diet quality because their foot consumption did not comply with the guidelines. As nutrition knowledge has been linked to people’s eating perception and practices, nutrition education may improve their dietary pattern.
