Abstract

The study aims to explore the mixed marriage Bataknese and Javanese Families‟ attitude toward heritage language maintenance and the ways they maintain their Bataknese heritage language. The participants of this research consist of 85 mixed marriage Bataknese and Javanese Families who live in Semarang and Tegal. The finding of this study suggests that mixed marriage Bataknese and Javanese Families‟ lack competencies in heritage language hamper the communication in Bataknese heritage language with their family members such as children, spouses, siblings, and parents for its maintenance. The findings from this study also indicate that the respondents shows positive attitude towards their efforts in maintaining their heritage language. They agreed that Bataknese language is a unique and beautiful language and need to be maintained. They said that Bataknese language is such a unique and beautiful language. They did not agree that using heritage language as daily communitication is something embrassing. Keywords: language maintenance, heritage language, language shift
