Abstract

Most lecturers of English as a Foreign Language have the duty of not only teaching the language skills that make their students use English actively, but also in understanding reading texts in a culturally bounded way. This article is based on a research that proves novels as an ideal for developing a cultural awareness of language. 41 Novel Analysis students from the Faculty of Letters, English Letters Program or English Department of Soegijapranata Catholic University in Semarang became the subject of the research. Employing a qualitative and quantitative research, the research showed that it is important to promote the learning of the target culture via English language novels because it can justify a better understanding of students' own native cultural awareness
