Abstract

This research focuses on adult’s motivation in learning English. It was carried out to know whether adults have certain kind of motivation. The writer used questionnaire that consists of 18 items with Likert scale (1 to 5) and 10 statements with three options. The data got were analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). The first five items are about attitudes toward learning English which are positively worded items and the next five items are negatively worded items. Items no 11 – 14 are about integrative motivation and no 15 – 18 are about instrumental motivation. The ten items in the next part are on the motivational intensity. The participants of the study were 20 members of the club. Based on the data analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that Most of the adult participants have favorable motivation to learn English as the mean is 2.05.Items 11 to 14 are on integrative motivation and the mean for these items is 1.75 meaning that most of the participants have integrative motivation. Items 15 to 18 are on instrumental motivation. The mean of items 15-18 is 1.88. This means that most of the participants have instrumental motivation. Furthermore, most participants show high motivational intensity. More than half participants chose the second or the third options among the three. These two options show that they have motivational intensity. The qualitative data from interview support the finding that they have high motivation to learn English in their small group with similar aged members.
